Introducing Cergi- Haiti's next president

Friday, March 4,2011- Ferrier, Haiti Day 2
"Today we spent the morning in the airport.  Our plane was supposed to take off at 7:15 and we didnt even fly out until 9, and thats only because the other airline let us use their plane.  It was nice getting to Cap Haitian, I felt like I was home.  We made a lot of stops to get food and one to get gas.  It was so good to see Ricky again.  When I saw all the people from last year I felt even more at home.  They are my Haitian family, I cant believe it has been a year!  I miss all the people who came last year, it is not the same without them.  But I think the people this year will be ok.  They are having Mardi Gras down here this weekend which is so cool.  There were guys walking around with their body covered in paper, wearing masks, and cracking whips.  We went on a tour and then to the NEW SCHOOL (which looks amazing) for the party.  I asked Ricky and he said they are called "Magicas" and they wear the clothes covered in paper.  They put the mask on so it enables them to relax and dance.  I believe he said the whips were to keep the evil away.  Not sure.  Janet said earlier they are supposed to be some type of acting as one of the spirits.  At the new school they sang and danced and had KARAOKE!! I am so glad I brought the camcorder this year.  The village has improved so much since I have been here last and I hope it continues on that way and we do a lot while we are here this week...

We went to the lake today and had to walk through it barefoot.  That was hard for some people.  When we did it the second time they were trying to find stones to step on so their shoes wouldnt get wet while some Haitian boys were trying to help by moving the stone's closer to them.  Who cares about getting your shoes wet and being uncomfortable with wet socks when these kids are running around barefoot...

I saw all my kids today.  Didn't see Joraldine at first and I got nervous.  Midlene came running up to me. I was so happy to see her, she looks like she is doing well.  She is still as silly and the biggest camera hog as ever.  I saw Phillipe.  He is not himself, he is really quiet and small.  We will have get him checked on. I finally saw Joraldine at the school, she is really small it seems like I made her so much bigger in my head.  I saw Guermanie when I was sitting on the roof this afternoon.  I called out to her and she gave me one of her "oh, its you I dont really care" looks. hahaha she has not changed a bit.

We had rice and beans for lunch! I have been waiting on that all year! it was so good!  We also had some kind of plantain-meatball- patty that taste really good despite its looks.  And we had goat stew... aw I missed seeing the goat get cooked this year.  They renovated the house, now there are tile floors and a new bathroom (unless I missed out on it last time).  There is a baby in the house.  His name is Cergi (we later nicknamed him Chug-a-Lug) and he is 15 months old.  However, he is the size of a 3 month old.  He has an extra finger on both hands and he has blonde hair (which is a sign of malnutrition)  The extra fingers show that he may have some genetic defects.  Janet said he may not live long.  The mother has 3 other kids and she had a 2 year old that dies last year.  She just does not have the means to feed them.  It broke my heart. I hope everything turns out for that baby."
