Just One More Day

Friday, March 12, 2010- Ferrier, Haiti Day 7
"It's quiet here.  Everybody is in the Dominican. Today is our last day here and tomorrow its back to everyday American life.  This morning I woke up after my first bad night sleep since I got here.  It took me a long time to go to sleep last night.  I woke up this morning and laid there listening to the sounds of Ferrier.  The roosters, the women cooking breakfast in the kitchen, and the people in the village beginning their daily routine.  I watched the sunrise and wished this wasnt one of the last ones I would see in Haiti.  The children all came to the house for breakfast and we went to jackson's school to take pictures of the kids who need to be sponsored.  We took 300 pictures today and I got to see all of the faces of the children who need people to help them go to school.  These children who has so little but carry big smiles and are enthusiastic about learning.  It's crazy how kids in America have access to such a great education but are not thankful or do not care about their education...

It's dark now and everybody is packing to go.  Its funny to know that before, I could not wait until Friday when I could go home.  That was a week ago.  That was the old me.  This week has changed everything.  I am going to miss this place, these people and the surroundings.  While everyone was at the Dominican I rested with one of the little Haitian boys.  He was a beautiful child and he slept for the longest time and I just stared at him looking at God's work.  He had long eyelashes, perfect ears, and a nose and a mouth and little arms and legs like any other 4 year old.  However, this little boy lives in poverty.  And when I held him in my lap I needed an explanation of why he could not have what other little boys in America have...

We had our last family dinner together. The women in the kitchen sang songs and we had a good time.  While I was inside, a girl who is Guermanie's friend threw a paper to Adrianna.  I got Ricky to translate it for us.  It says that she would like to go to school and that she will pray for us and she loves us and wants us to help her.  I wish the paper had a name on it so that someone could sponsor her.  She did not ask for toys or money but she asked to go to school.  As Ricky read it to me in his broken English I felt for her.  Zanes and some others came by  seeing them and saying goodbye was very hard.  We have made such good friends this week and they mean so much to us.  I felt like by leaving, I was leaving a part of myself in Haiti.  All I can think about is all that has happened while I was here and when I can come back to see them.  We have all changed and for the better.  I cannot wait to tell everybody about my trip to Haiti."
